The Nightmare Never Ends (1980)

nightmare-titleWhat do you get when you bring together a novelist who’s latest book in called “God is Dead”, his devout catholic wife who has dreams about Nazi’s, a crazy bearded, homeless prophet who’s the only one who seems to know what’s going one and a chain smoking, angry cop who has no clue as to what’s going on, and Satan worship?

That’s what you get with The Nightmare Never Ends, AKA, Cataclysm, the 1980 thriller starting Richard Moll, better known as Bull from the late 80’s TV series Night Court. A outstanding journey into laughable horror and absurdity.

This is a wonderfully cheesy movie with every cliché writer, Philip Yordan, could imagine, right down to the follower of Satan as a wealthy, handsome, ageless, arrogant young man with his bevy beautiful, sexy lady follower. With all the stereotypical characters, there also a drunken, belligerent landlady, a black fortune teller and a cop side kick who sounds like he’s going a silly Bogie impersonation.

While Richard Moll, who is listed as Charles Moll, does a adequate job, Faith Clift, who plays his wife, brings to the scream one of the worse acting performances I’ve seen in years. Don’t misunderstand me, I enjoyed every frame of her performance, just not the way I think Faith had intended. She appeared in several of directors Phillip Marshak and Tom McGowan’s work, so we can only figure something was going on there.

The disco scenes will be a real test of pure cheese lovers. This was 1980, and disco was popular, so setting some of the action in a dance club, however pointless, was most likely to capitalize on the current fade. The songs used are dreadful, even painful to the ears.

There is one scene, however, between the wild-eyed prophet and Richard Moll, the atheist writer, about God and Satan that I found rather well written. There are a few good ideas presented in the film but overall the film is horrible.
