The Day the Monkees Met Jimi Hendrix

I wish I had a time machine. I don’t think I would bother to try to change things. Maybe save my dog that was hit by a car when I was 15, but that’s it. I am not smart enough to mess with history.

What I would like is to see things like this:

It happened back in summer of 1067, the summer of love, that a made-for-TV bubblegum pop band named the Monkees headlined a tour with the wild psychedelic guitar player named Jimi Hendrix. For you youngsters, this might all be meaningless, but quick search on YouTube might help you understand what I’m talking about.

The story goes like this, two of the Monkess, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork met Jimi at the Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967 and had the idea of Hendrix as the open act for the Monkees latest tour. Hendrex agreed a few weeks later.

Dolenz recalled, “”The Monkees was a very theatrical band in my eyes and so was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It would make a perfect match. Jimi must have thought so too, because a few weeks later he agreed to be our opening act for a upcoming summer tour.” From the book, Black Gold By Steven Roby.

During the Hendrix part of the show, it is said that the teeny-bopper girls, who were probably all under the age of 16, screamed for the Monkees with chants like  “We Want Davy (Jones)!” Jimi’s response was the use of the middle finger, words to match and leaving the stage. The pairing lasted only five shows. Jimi told the press, “Some parents who brought their kids complained that our act was vulgar. We decided it was just the wrong audience. I think they replaced me with Mickey Mouse!”

Of course Jimi’s star work burn out just three years later. On September 18, 1970, the bad news stunned the world.

Both acts truly never died. Both continue to live on with the fans. Google either name and you’ll see what I mean.

I’d like to go back and watch the expressions of the Experience as they listened to the booing little girls, screaming for Davey Jones! Can you imagine what was said as they got back into their dressing room?
